Infrastructure Management

The objectives of this work package are:

  • To define an abstracted infrastructure based on fine grained resource virtualisation.
  • To build the foundations for network based resource sharing.
  • To build support for SLA-aware service provisioning and SLA enforcement.
  • To provide infrastructural support for orchestrated, heterogeneous and dynamic resources.
  • To enable network aware resource virtualisation and harmonisation.

This work package focuses on the SLA-aware management of resources such as computers, networks, services, applications and storage. It will enable an SOI to be mapped to a physical infrastructure and SLAs to be enforced at the resource level.

The work package will define and demonstrate an abstract, service-oriented framework for SLA-aware dynamic resource provisioning and configuration in support of an SOA. The framework manages the resource issues associated with the SLA processes of specification, negotiation, fulfilment and enforcement.
Key issues to be addressed include:

  • Framework definition – that identifies the infrastructure resource features that need to be exposed at abstract level.
  • Abstract infrastructure virtualisation – focusing on abstracted hardware environments with harmonised, implementation technology neutral interfaces.
  • Management roles, entities and interfaces – that enable automated policy enactment and its integration with operator UI based decision making.
  • Resource specification – that enables the determination of virtual resource requirements in support of SLA negotiation.
  • Configuration, scheduling and provisioning – that enables the SLA-aware management of virtual and physical resources.
  • Dynamic re-provisioning – that enables an infrastructure to be responsive to SLA requirements.
  • Demand anticipation – that enables automatic and autonomic control of an infrastructure
  • SLA negotiation and support.
  • Alerts, monitoring and logging – that enables an infrastructure to be cope with failure and to meet SLA requirements.

The work package will also provide a test bed resource and workload synthesis tools for this and other relevant work packages, particularly the use case activity.
