Standards
SLA@SOI researchers play an important role in targeted open standards.
OCCI: Open Cloud Computing Interface
In early 2009, following participation in the Open Grid Forum‘s OGF25 event, Andy Edmonds from SLA@SOI was invited to help support and ultimately co-chair the Open Cloud Computing Interface working group.
SLA@SOI has contributed heavily to OCCI since then. Use-cases were supplied to help scope the specification, as reflected in the OCCI Use Case & scoping document. Outputs and learnings from the Infrastructure Management research in SLA@SOI were used to guide and inform the OCCI core and infrastructure models. As co-chair significant editorial work was performed on the standards.
Working closely with fellow travellers from research (e.g. the RESERVOIR project) and industry (e.g. RabbitMQ), these efforts have resulted in the publication by the Open Grid Forum of the OCCI standards as Proposed Recommendations in April 2011.
The specific documents that SLA@SOI has contributed extensively to are:
- Open Cloud Computing Interface – Core (GFD.183)
- Open Cloud Computing Interface – Infrastructure (GFD.184)
- Open Cloud Computing Interface – RESTful HTTP Rendering (GFD.185)
See the OGF pess release for complete details.
USDL: Universal Service Description Language
The Unified Service Description Language (USDL) is a platform-neutral language for describing services. It was consolidated from SAP Research projects addressing services-related research to enable wider leverage of services on the Internet.
USDL was initiated as a standard at W3C by SAP, Siemens, DFKI and Attensity (formerly Empolis). A dedicated W3C Incubator Group was created on September 18th 2010 to further develop the standard, represent USDL mapping scenarios in UML, and draft recommendations for possible tools and editorial support.
WS Agreement SLA Specification & WS Agreement Negotiation Standard
Researchers from the Technical University of Dortmund are active in the GRAAP Working Group (Grid Resource Allocation and Agreement Protocol WG) of the Compute Area of the OGF where contributions to both the WS Agreement SLA Specification and WS Agreement Negotiation Standard have been made.
The WS-Agreement Specificaiont Version 1.0 Experience Document (GFD.176) has been published, and the WS-Agreement Negotiation Version 1.0 proposed recommendation has been made, with publication expected in Q4 2011.

- OCCI Published as Proposed Recommendations April 21, 2011
Congratulations to the Open Cloud Computing Interface working group which has just had two of its standards published by the Open Grid Forum as Proposed Recommendations. The OCCI working group is co-chaired by Andy Edmonds, an SLA@SOI researcher focused on Infrastructure Management, and has benefited from the extensive open research carried out in SLA@SOI on existing infrastructure models and interfaces. SLA@SOI looks forward to seeing this standard develop from strength to strength.
